Progress on proposed trail system

There has been much buzz about the proposed Chehalem Heritage Trail, a major trail system that would connect Newberg to Dundee. We want you to know what's going on with the project.

We have just scheduled the first meeting of a new advisory committee. This committee will advise on what is tentatively being called the Newberg-Dundee Connector segment of the trail system. This includes the first three segments of the Strategic Plan - Dayton Avenue, Hess Creek and the Willamette Riverfront.

There are four meetings planned for this committee between now and January.

The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20 at the CPRD District Office.

About the project

The proposed Chehalem Heritage Trail will be an outstanding continuous 70+ mile trail system connecting Newberg, Dundee and surrounding areas while preserving and enhancing the greater Chehalem Valley community parks, historic heritage, native habitats and open space.

Welcome to our new & improved website!

A Message from Director Don Loving

Those of us who help lead the Chehalem Park & Recreation District have long thought we have a bit of an identity crisis. Not individually necessarily, but certainly corporately. Research and polling has shown us over the years that we are a popular piece of Yamhill County local government — at least to those who recognize that we are, in fact, local government. That has been the catch.

How often have you heard some reference to "our great city parks?" We do have great parks, but — and nothing against our friends at both the cities of Newberg and Dundee — they aren't "city parks." They are "park district parks." The Chehalem Park & Recreation District is an independent local government authority that encompasses Newberg, Dundee and the surrounding hinterland. Essentially, we have the same jurisdictional boundaries as does the Newberg School District, except we don't spill over the Yamhill County line anywhere.

Why does this matter? For a couple of reasons. First, if we do something right, "credit where credit is due." Second, if we don't do something right, you need to know where to take your concerns … or, dare we use the word, complain.

The CPRD Board of Directors includes five elected members. Yes, we are elected. It's amazing how many people I talk to don't know that. Just like Dundee City Council members or Newberg School Board members, we stand for election every four years. We are accountable to you, the voting public. In addition to myself, the board currently consists of Mike McBride, Larry Anderson, Mike Ragsdale and Deona Twenge. Park district board meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month. We start our monthly meetings at 6 p.m., a little earlier than most jurisdictions. You are always welcome to attend. Generally speaking they are held at the CPRD administrative offices on Elliott Road. Occasionally we venture out elsewhere; such deviations are always noted in the Graphic.

Collectively the board is very excited about having created the new Public Information Coordinator position now held by Kat Ricker. We acknowledge that we need to do a better job of blowing our own horn, so to speak. To some, CPRD is only Chehalem Glenn golf course. To others we're just the nearest park. Or the pool. Or the Cultural Center. In fact, we are all of those and so much more. Just one example: We're planning a trails system that's gonna knock your socks off! You're going to hear a lot more about that in the months ahead. In fact, you're going to hear a lot more about anything and everything CPRD-related in the weeks and months ahead, as Kat helps us better publicize the things we've been doing well for years and the great new plans we have for the future.

Not to sound maudlin, but we don't get paid to be on the CPRD Board. We serve as a way of giving back to the community we love, in an attempt to make our collective lives better. We believe in the mission of the park district, and we try to assist our excellent CPRD staff in helping you, the public. I look forward to sharing more with you down the road in this new forum, as the Chehalem Park & Recreation District — better late than never — fully embraces the communication technology of the 21st Century!

Shawn White Visits Chehalem Skatepark

Two-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder and champion skateboarder Shawn White stopped by the Chehalem Skatepark Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 while on the Portland leg of the Dew Tour. He said the CPRD skatepark is one of his favorites because of the flow, its size and how well-maintained it is. (Yeah, we get that a lot.)

Mural finished at Bonnie Benedict Preschool

Sherwood resident Allison Hamilton was recognized at the CPRD Board meeting Aug. 26 for the creation of a mural at CPRD's Bonnie Benedict Preschool. The colorful outdoor mural evokes a child's impression of a sunny meadow of wildflowers and trees, livening up the courtyard space where C.A.R.E. childcare and preschool children spend time each day.

Allison created the mural to earn the Girl Court Gold Award for Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington. The 18-year-old managed the entire project, including securing paint donations from Sherwin Williams, conceptualizing the design and leading children in helping paint the mural (their handprints create the flowers).

Safety Town - Dangerously Fun?

Safety Town is a big success. The annual five-day camp educates children entering kindergarten or first grade this fall on various types of safety - personal, bicycle, pedestrian, fire, water, animal, electrical, school bus and poison safety, and teaches them when and how to call 911.

It's a joint effort by the Newberg-Dundee Police Department and CPRD, supported by local business donations. Sign-ups filled up well in advance this year, and the typical high heat of early August has staved off most of the week.

American Profile Magazine Highlights CPRD

American Profile is the national magazine insert featured in newspapers including the Newberg Graphic every weekend. This week's edition (Aug. 1 - 7) highlights CPRD for intergenerational programs combining children and senior citizens at the Adult Enrichment Center in the cover story "Lessons for Life."

Here's an excerpt.
Students forge friendships with seniors in Newberg, Ore., too. At lunchtime, students from Chehalem Valley Middle School walk across the street to the Chehalem Adult Enrichment Center, where they set tables, greet seniors and serve catered hot meals. Then, fourth-graders from Antonia Crater Elementary School next door pop in to help with cleanup.
Read the whole story for quotes from fourth-graders Lucas Klingler and Alexandra Wujcik, volunteer Mary Kreth, and senior specialist Matthew Compton.
