Honoring the Memory of Donna McCain

Chehalem Park and Recreation District is honoring the memory of Donna McCain, who passed away May 15, 2012.

Donna McCain was an integral part of Chehalem Park and Recreation District. Donna was elected to the Board of Directors in 1985. In 2009, the Board made Donna an honorary board member for life because of her work with the District since its formation.

Donna married Bob McCain in 1954. They had two daughters, one son, and six grandchildren. They made Newberg their home in 1959. They purchased half interest in the Newberg Graphic at that time and eventually owned full interest until 1985.

Donna graduated from Grant High School, where she was a State Champion Drum Majorette. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Oregon.

Donna was the Grand National Treasurer for Alpha Gamma Delta. She was responsible and recognized for setting up many chapters for various universities and colleges from the early 1960s into the mid ‘80s.

In 1973, Donna served on the planning committee that designed the United Methodist Church, and from 1989 to 2002, Donna served on Newberg City Council. She also worked for the Chamber of Commerce and was recognized as Citizen of the year.

Donna was an integral part of the community as a mother, business owner, elected official, and volunteer. The CPRD Board of Directors formally recognized her as a friend and teammate to CPRD.

Donna will be missed by many in the community and her colleagues and comrades at the District. A plaque commemorating her contributions to CPRD hangs in Chehalem Senior Center.

Service will be held 2 p.m. this Saturday at First United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made at the following locations:

  • CPRD Foundation - (Drop off at Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center or CPRD Administration Office)
  • Serenity Hospice
  • U of O Athletic Fund
  • Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation
  • Newberg Kiwanis Foundation
  • Alzheimer's Association Oregon Chapter
