Memorial Park playground renovation

Neighborhood Information Meeting
6 p.m. Wed., Dec. 19
Memorial Park Scouthouse

The playground at Memorial Park is one of the oldest playgrounds in Chehalem Park and Recreation District. The playground manufacturer is no longer in business, and replacement parts are not available. Sections of the playground are rusting through the painted powder coating, and there other maintenance issues as well.

The Newberg Rotary Clubs as well as Kiwanis Club are helping to fund a new playground for the space where the current playground structures are located. This will mean a closure of the playground for several months.

Some new equipment highlights will include swings and a large climbing dome.

A public information meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m Wednesday, December 19th in the Memorial Park Scout House, which is next to the park shelter.

If you have questions, please contact CPRD Park Supervisor Jim McMaster, at 503-209-2222.

Improvements at Chehalem Aquatic & Fitness Center

Pool Lighting
The lighting in the pool has been completely replaced with energy efficient lighting throughout the facility. The new lights over the pool use a new type of lighting technology called magnetic induction lighting. The wattage is less than our current lighting, but the light is brighter. The lights use less energy than what was originally installed back in 1970. The bulbs do not lose their light levels over the years and have a working life of 18 years without need for bulb replacement. The new lighting was made possible with a grant from the Energy Trust. The payback for these new lights is three to five years, due to energy savings.

New Sundeck
Patrons may not realize that the aquatic center has a sundeck.  Even though we are now into the winter months, take a look out the back window by the diving board and see what you can enjoy next summer. The old deck was surrounded by cyclone fencing with barbed wire along the top – uninviting, to say the least! The new deck opens up into a grass area where volleyball standards will be installed as well as tetherball. The deck area has concrete ping-pong tables to play on year-round as well as a children’s sand box for the summer months. New picnic tables with large umbrellas will also appear on the deck this coming spring. None of these improvements would have taken place with out community partners that donated their time and money: special thanks to Newberg Early Bird Rotary Club and TDP Landscaping, Ernst Nursery, and Raugust Trucking for their generous donations, and to Diana Kay Kessler and Abby Wogenrich, for painting the mural.

Aquatic Center Master Plan
The aquatic center is now 43 years old and is feeling its age. In order to maintain this community asset, major repairs will need to be made in the future, most notably infrastructure repairs that the public cannot see (underground plumbing, HVAC upgrades etc.)

We are also researching possible changes to the outside of the building are also being researched, such as new driving entries and exits, parking expansion as well as additional amenities connected to the center. As our community grows, we are hoping that Chehalem Aquatic Center will meet our changing needs.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Park and Facilities Supervisor Jim McMaster at 503-209-2222 or jmcmaster@cprdnewbeg.org.

8th Annual Fall Bazaar & Craft Fair - with Children's Workshop!

The Fall Bazaar has become a tradition in Newberg, and we are proud of it. More than 400 people were in attendance last year, and for good reason. Our bazaar features more than 40 wonderful raffle baskets, a silent auction, food, and of course a wonderful assortment of gift and craft vendors.

This year we are happy to include the 9th annual Community School Gift Workshop as part of the bazaar, where children and their parents can create creative gifts together, on a budget. This is the same Holiday Gift Workshop many youngsters have enjoyed in years past. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The bazaar is a great place to have fun and do a bit of shopping along the way. Last year’s festival was a huge success and supported the senior center and its programs greatly. So come to this year’s bazaar. You will be glad that you did.

Draws for 2012 Newberg Open Tennis Tournament

Alice Luo to Compete in London 2012 Paralympic Games

A familiar face to the morning crew at our pool will compete on the world stage. Alice Luo will compete in the London 2012 Paralympic Games, which is the second-largest sporting event in the world, second only to the Olympics.

Alice trains at Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center with her coach Mark Maxwell, who was head coach for the U.S. Paralympic Swim Team in 1996 and 2000.

Alice has been an elite swimming competitor off and on her entire life. She first competed as a Taiwanese Olympian. Her life changed in 2002 when an injury left her partially paralyzed, but it was only a matter of time until her champion nature had her competing at elite levels again – and winning.

She competed in the 2008 Paralympics in Bejing, set a world record in 2009 in multiple events in Rio in the Short Course Worlds event, and in 2010 she won a gold medal in the 100-yard breast stroke at the Asian Games in China. That same year, she took two sixth places in the Long Course Worlds event in the Netherlands.

“I love to play in the water,” says Alice. “I like to win.”

Information from the London 2012 Paralympic Games website

Featuring a total of 600 athletes competing for 148 medals, Swimming will be the second biggest competition at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The classification for the sport includes categories for athletes with visual impairments, physical impairments and intellectual impairments They use the four basic strokes: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly.

Classification is a unique element of Paralympic sports, intended to ensure fair competition. As each sport at the Paralympic Games requires different skills and competencies, the impact of impairment on the performance of the athletes varies. That’s why each sport has its own unique classification rules.
