Babe Nicklous dies at 83

Martin Thomas "Babe" Nicklous, longtime CPRD employee who worked for the District for more than 30 years, died in his home on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016. Babe was 83.

A gravesite service will be held at 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13th at Fernwood Pioneer Cemetery on 500 Everest Road. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13th, at Zion Lutheran Church at 301 S. River Street in Newberg.

Among his many achievements, Babe helped in the planning and development of more than 18 new parks.

When he retired as assistant superintendent in 1998, the park formerly known as Pool Park was named in his honor as a lasting tribute to his long and distinguished career.

Babe was born in Newberg in 1933 and attended Newberg Union High, graduating in 1952.

For the next four years, he served his country as crew chief for F-89 jet fighters in the United States Air Force, returning home to Newberg in 1956 to begin civilian life. He worked for the City of Newberg, then transitioned to the newly created park and recreation district.

Babe Nicklous Pool Park was named for Babe. It features a basketball court, playground equipment, restrooms, walking and jogging paths and picnic tables.
