Newberg Middle School Track and Field (NMSTF)

Chehalem Park and Recreation District is offering the Newberg Middle School Track and Field (NMSTF) program this spring.

Practice begins March 12th and will be two or three times per week, depending on the meet schedule. Practices will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Newberg High School track.

Meets will start the first week of April and will run through mid-May. There will be one meet per week. Meets are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Coaches are needed for the following events.

Sprints (Girls' 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 100 m Hurdles)
Sprints (Boys' 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 100 m Hurdles)
Relays (Girls and Boys 4 x 100 m, 4 x 400 m)
Throws (Girls and Boys' Shot, Turbo Javelin, and Discus)

Honoring Mary Louise Kreth

Chehalem Senior Center is honoring Mary Kreth. Mary passed away on Dec. 24, 2011.

Senior Program Specialist Matt Compton said, "It was pretty common for Mary to come to the senior center every day we were open and attended nearly every event we hosted. To say that she was dedicated to the community would be an understatement. Mary was a great friend and will be missed."

Mary started volunteering at the senior center four years ago.

Mary often would help sort books in the library. She managed the ongoing group puzzle and involved herself in every youth activity the senior center has coordinated.

"But most of all, Mary was a great spokesperson for the senior center," said Matt. "She prided herself on being an engaging person. She made it a personal project to meet everyone she could and made sure that every one met knew about the programs and services that we offered."

A memorial service will be held on Friday at the senior center. The immediate family will be holding a private memorial at a later date. Condolences may be send to 18100 Hillside Drive, Newberg, OR 97132.

There are too many to thank, but here are just some of our supporters this year we are grateful to.

Our recreation program received donations from A-Dec, Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, Express Employment Professionals, Dr. Whittaker & Dr. Brigman, Hopp, Insurance Agency, Inc., Dutch Bros. Coffee, First Federal Savings and Loan, Newberg Boat Club, Chehalem Valley Transit, Bon Appétit, Aspen Creek, Showcase of Flowers, Nap’s Thriftway, Wine Country Catering, Cindy Rose Photography this year. These donations will be used to provide scholarships, help fund free events as well as keep costs low.

Early Bird Rotary Club donated benches and pavers for the Dundee Skate Park, pictured below.

We are grateful for the continued support from the Noon Rotary Club and Kiwanis.

Our sports department received donations from Willcuts Realty supporting the youth basketball program this year, from Hagan Hamilton Insurance supporting youth soccer, and from Newberg Community Foundation and Morning Rotary club to help with the restructuring of middle school basketball. We are also very grateful to Sunshine Cleaners for keeping the football uniforms clean and neat.

Community School is grateful for the continued support of Dutch Bros.

Chehalem Senior Center is thankful to event sponsors and continuing supporters Arbor Oaks, Chehalem Springs and Astor House.

Chehalem Aquatic & Fitness Center brought in an electronic scoreboard this year, thanks to NHS Booster Club, CST, Chehalem Water Polo, Coke Cola and Rotary Club. Rotary also provided funds for scholarships. Providence funded Touch Pads. Kiwanis helped provide scholarships for swim lessons.

Again, there are far too many supporters to list. We are grateful for every contribution of time and resources from our community, and we are grateful to everyone who makes time for themselves to take a mental and physical health break to hang out in one of our parks, take part in a class or activity, and come to our events.

Tiger Cub Basketball begins Jan 7

Tiger Cub Basketball is designed for the youngest of players, in grades K-2. Students will have a fun-filled hour of dribbling, shooting, passing, teamwork, and camaraderie under the direction of Ed McCabe, each Saturday thru February 4.

Class sessions at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. have openings with an early registration fee of $35.00 in-district and $45.00 out-of-district if registered before Dec 31. Tiger Cub’s regular registration fee of $46.00 in-district, $55.00 out-of-district begins on Dec 31. Each participant will receive a basketball the last day of camp.

Update on Fortune Park

Our newest neighborhood park in Dundee
Opening Spring 2012

Chehalem Park and Recreation District is developing a new neighborhood park in Dundee. You can check out the progress now. Fortune Park is named for the Fortune family who made this park possible (Fortune Distributing).

This is the only park CPRD has developed on the south side of 99W in Dundee.

The park covers nearly an acre. It is located at 700 Locust Street, between SE Maple Street and SE Locust Street.

Superintendent Don Clements says the district has wanted to put a park on the southeast side of Dundee for about a decade. Fortune Park will provide a place to throw your Frisbee, play some basketball, picnic or play on the new playground.

When completed, this ADA-accessible park will feature walkways around the east side of the park to Maple Street as well as along Locust Street, a full-sized basketball court, drinking fountain, two picnic tables, and modern playground equipment where children of all ages can climb and spin, and swing.

Until this spring, only the walkway is available for public use. The grass is still trying to grow in. Construction on the basketball hoops and playground equipment will be completed sometime in the spring of 2012.

Chehalem Aquatic Center is currently taking registration for Small Group Session 2-B which begins the week of November 21st. With three children per class this three week, 6 lesson set has a great instructor to student ratio. Private Swim Lessons

Chehalem Aquatic Center is accepting new clients for private swim lessons. Private lessons are a one on one teaching format and lesson structure is modified to meet each clients needs. Private lesson sessions run twice a week (M/W or Tu/Th) for either three or six weeks. Call 503-538-4813 to be placed on the appointment list. Cost is $96 for three weeks.

Home School Swim Lessons

Chehalem Aquatic Center offers swim lessons geared to children who receive schooling at home. Teen Hip Hop at the Armory

This class teaches rhythm, coordination, musicality, and hip hop choreography without suggestive music/movements. Students are challenged to think on their feet while enjoying an energetic and fast-paced dance class. Hip Hop develops focus, strength, and agility in a fun environment. Public Meeting on the Cultural District

A public meeting to discuss conceptual plans for the area known as the Cultural District will be held 6:30 pm. Wed., Oct. 12 in Newberg Public Library.

Architects from Hennebery Eddy and Landscape Architects from Mayer/Reed will present conceptual plans derived from the input from the community and ideas and concepts from the Project for Public Spaces workshops held in recent months.

Topics will include potential for land use within the four-block district, district identity, festivals and events, parking and circulation.

BACKGROUND

In the center of Newberg, a place is being reborn. For years, the area surrounding the Newberg Public Library and Central School has been a civic destination for the community. With the development of the Chehalem Cultural Center and Rotary Centennial Park the area has continued to grow. Today, along with the library, this area has become known as the Cultural District.

The vision of the City of Newberg, Chehalem Park and Recreation District, Newberg Downtown Coalition, neighbors and stakeholders is to identify and strengthen the cultural district as a gathering place where people discover the literary, artistic, and historical culture of the area, attend a class or program, check out books, view an exhibit, participate in a community event, or simply sit on a bench and visit with a friend.

Special Paddle Launch Event August 18th

Thursday, August 18th, Chehalem Paddle Launch will open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (our normal weekend hours) in order to join in the fun of the annual Willamette Riverkeeper Paddle Oregon event.

The public is welcome to use the launch for our regular routes.

A special guided tour will also be offered from Chehalem Paddle Launch to Champoeg State Park. The tour will run twice, once at 11 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. Park at Chehalem Paddle Launch and a qualified guide will lead you on the scenic meander of about 2.5 hours, downstream to Champoeg. A free CPRD shuttle will take you back to Chehalem Paddle Launch. (Or you may arrange your own transportation.) The cost of the tour is $25, the regular four-hour craft rental rate.

We are excited to announce that Chehalem Paddle Launch opens June 25th. You now have a place to inexpensively rent a kayak or canoe and enjoy a peaceful paddle in the Willamette River right inside the Chehalem Park and Recreation District, away from motorboats.

We have 14 Current Design recreational kayaks and four We-no-nah Royalex canoes.

The launch is a CPRD program developed by a group of community volunteers under the guidance of the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Institute.

The launch will be open from June 25th through Labor Day.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

More than 155 fish were caught, the weather was perfect. . . What more could we have asked for?

NEWBERG, Ore. – A public meeting to discuss conceptual plans for the area known as the Cultural District will be held 6:30 pm. Wed., Oct. 12 in Newberg Public Library.

Architects from Hennebery Eddy and Landscape Architects from Mayer/Reed will present conceptual plans derived from the input from the community and ideas and concepts from the Project for Public Spaces workshops held in recent months.

Topics will include potential for land use within the four-block district, district identity, festivals and events, parking and circulation.

BACKGROUND

In the center of Newberg, a place is being reborn. For years, the area surrounding the Newberg Public Library and Central School has been a civic destination for the community. With the development of the Chehalem Cultural Center and Rotary Centennial Park the area has continued to grow. Today, along with the library, this area has become known as the Cultural District.

The vision of the City of Newberg, Chehalem Park and Recreation District, Newberg Downtown Coalition, neighbors and stakeholders is to identify and strengthen the cultural district as a gathering place where people discover the literary, artistic, and historical culture of the area, attend a class or program, check out books, view an exhibit, participate in a community event, or simply sit on a bench and visit with a friend.

The Main Event - our summer registration fair for CPRD, Chehalem Cultural Center, and PCC - is just three weeks away, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21st at Chehalem Cultural Center.

Each of our departments is cooking up fun things for you. Here's a sneak peek at just some of the things we're working on.

- Did you know we're offering a two-day beer brewing class, taught by a microbiology professor, just in time for Father's Day? The instructor will be there to tell you all about it!

- Free massages, again - because who couldn't benefit from ten minutes of aaaaahhhh? This is the Gentle Touch massage.

- Chi Gong demonstrations you can join in

- Math Night activities, just four days away from the big Math Night itself

-Musical Theater will perform again, thank you Community School...

- Zumba, Zumba, Zumba! Come rock out the gym with mini dance parties all day long. This is what made people say "The party is in the gym!" at the last Main Event.

- Chehalem Paddle Launch will be there with kayaks to introduce to our area's own kayak rental program which is launching this summer. Seriously! Did you know? You will after May 21st.

Newberg Camellia Festival March 26th

The Asian/Pacific themed Newberg Camellia Festival (Newberg’s official flower), hosted by the Oregon Camellia Society, will be held at Chehalem Cultural Center and other locations throughout the city from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 26th.

The highlight of the day will be the judging of hundreds of beautiful Camellias by the Oregon Camellia Society, entered by both professional and amateur growers. There will be floral displays by the Chehalem Garden Club and the Sogetsu School of Ikebana-Portland. General admissions to community activities throughout the day are free to the public. This event is sponsored by the City of Newberg and the Chehalem Park and Recreation District.

Chehalem Park and Recreation District is holding a public meeting on the Master Plan for Phase 1 of proposed Chehalem Heritage Trails. Public comments are welcome.

Phase One would develop approximately 20 miles of trail connecting Dundee and Newberg along Dayton Avenue, paralleling lower and middle Hess Creek, and linking the Willamette River waterfronts in Newberg and Dundee through pedestrian, bicycle, and multiuse trails.

This meeting will update the public on the progress of the Master Plan for Phase 1 (slated for completion in early 2011). This plan identifies the trail route, where easements will be needed across private property, plus preliminary engineering and cost estimates.

The Advisory Committee met four times and has concluded. Members include representatives from Dundee, Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon State Parks, George Fox University, and more.

Vigil-Agrimis, Inc., a Portland-based design firm that leads parks and trails projects, is leading a consultant team assisting CPRD with preliminary design for the proposed trail. Paul Agrimis is the project manager for the consultant team.

NEWBERG, Ore. - Chehalem Park and Recreation District’s Community School program is proud to offer a course in Beginning Mandarin Chinese. Felix Loo says he is excited to offer this course in the Newberg/Dundee area.

Loo says the timing is right to offer this course here because many residents travel to China on business or work with Chinese speakers.

“My objective is to give people in the region the opportunity to learn Chinese,” said Loo. Loo, born and raised in Taiwan, began speaking Mandarin as a child through immersion, as it is the official dialect used by Chinese and Taiwan governments. He holds a M.A. in teaching and is a licensed teacher for K-8 grades. He also holds a master’s degree in computer science. He is also a “certified language interpreter” in the state of Washington, he says.

Loo taught Mandarin at Portland State University for 15 years. He teaches elementary grades through the Community School program through the City of Lake Oswego, and has taught high school as well.

“The Chinese language is very unique,” says Loo. It has a different sound, the characters are written, and one syllable is pronounced at a time.

Chehalem Aquatic Center is accepting registration for the first of two winter session of swim lessons due to begin the week of January 10^th. Our regular group swim program meet Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday for five weeks. Morning, afternoon and evening lessons are available. Registration is based on both age and skill level. Lessons begin at 12 months - 14 years with novice through advanced levels. Small Group Swim Lessons

Chehalem Aquatic Center is currently taking registration its first winter session of Small Group Session which begins the week of January 10^th. Home School Swim Lessons

Chehalem Aquatic Center offers swim lessons geared to children who receive schooling at home.
