Chehalem Paddle Launch Opens June 9th

Here comes summer - Chehalem Paddle Launch opens Saturday, June 9th – weather permitting.

This will kick off our second season of the paddle launch. Rent a kayak or canoe and enjoy a peaceful paddle on the beautiful Willamette River. New this year – we will add three Bic paddleboards this season, in addition to our 14 Current Design recreational kayaks and four We-no-nah Royalex canoes. These are all available for rental on weekends on a first-come, first-serve basis – each at the same affordable rates.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.

Location - 3100 SE 8th Street in Dundee

$20.00 for 2 hours
$25.00 for 4 hours
$40.00 for 8 hours

No reservations are necessary - just bring your sunscreen and follow the road until it turns to gravel at the big semitruck trailer on the riverbank. Our smiling staff will be inside. We provide lifejackets, dry bags, safety whistles and instruction. Beginners are welcome!

If you do wish to reserve kayaks and canoes for yourself, your family or your group ahead of time, you can do so by calling us at (503) 537-2909 or stopping by Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center.

The launch is a CPRD program developed by a group of community volunteers under the guidance of the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Institute.

Honoring the Memory of Donna McCain

Chehalem Park and Recreation District is honoring the memory of Donna McCain, who passed away May 15, 2012.

Donna McCain was an integral part of Chehalem Park and Recreation District. Donna was elected to the Board of Directors in 1985. In 2009, the Board made Donna an honorary board member for life because of her work with the District since its formation.

Donna married Bob McCain in 1954. They had two daughters, one son, and six grandchildren. They made Newberg their home in 1959. They purchased half interest in the Newberg Graphic at that time and eventually owned full interest until 1985.

Donna graduated from Grant High School, where she was a State Champion Drum Majorette. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Oregon.

Donna was the Grand National Treasurer for Alpha Gamma Delta. She was responsible and recognized for setting up many chapters for various universities and colleges from the early 1960s into the mid ‘80s.

In 1973, Donna served on the planning committee that designed the United Methodist Church, and from 1989 to 2002, Donna served on Newberg City Council. She also worked for the Chamber of Commerce and was recognized as Citizen of the year.

Donna was an integral part of the community as a mother, business owner, elected official, and volunteer. The CPRD Board of Directors formally recognized her as a friend and teammate to CPRD.

Donna will be missed by many in the community and her colleagues and comrades at the District. A plaque commemorating her contributions to CPRD hangs in Chehalem Senior Center.

Service will be held 2 p.m. this Saturday at First United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made at the following locations:

  • CPRD Foundation - (Drop off at Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center or CPRD Administration Office)
  • Serenity Hospice
  • U of O Athletic Fund
  • Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation
  • Newberg Kiwanis Foundation
  • Alzheimer's Association Oregon Chapter
